‘Toad Hall’ No. 284 is a beloved family chalet which has been completely rebuilt after its 30 years of service. It is situated on the Hengistbury Head end of Mudeford Spit, where it enjoys the greatest variety of habitats and views amongst the beach hut community. One side leads onto unspoilt sandy beaches and the other looks out over the lagoon with its glorious sunsets and precious wildlife. Only steps away are the heather clad clifftop walks of Hengistbury Head and its sweeping woodland slopes.
The whole site is a nature reserve with Roe and Muntjac deer, foxes, badgers, several bat species and many more. The nearest wildlife neighbours are Britain’s rarest amphibians, the Natterjack toads. Their evening chorus from their pond opposite has inspired the hut’s name.

On the other side of the hut are perfect sandy beaches and coves which are safe for children and easy for launching paddleboards, canoes and other craft. Three minutes’ walk around the head of the peninsula takes you to Long Beach, where professional windsurfers practice their skills when the winds are right. Bird lovers will welcome its situation, particularly in the shoulder months of spring and autumn for its migrating birds. Ideally placed as it is between sandy shore, lush lagoon and inviting wood and moorlands, its veranda offers superb views.

Whether you arrive by bike, land train, ferry or pre-booked land rover, Hengistbury Head‘s peninsular creates a unique nature loving marine and rural idyll. Further along the sandspit towards Christchurch harbour, is the lively beach cafe and bar, with its contemporary cuisine and a shop with essential supplies.

In the holiday season, the ferry pier also provides pleasure trips across the harbour and upstream into the very heart of picturesque Christchurch, with its ancient buildings, charming museum and independent shops.
